Chapel Hill, NC – On an unseasonably warm, nearly 90-degree March day, stakeholders and community members gathered to celebrate the “topping off” of Building 11 at South Creek Chapel Hill. Marking the placement of the final structural piece on the building’s top floor, the milestone was commemorated with tours of the site and the creation of a time capsule that will be placed within the walls of Building 11, the first building scheduled for completion at South Creek.

Chapel Hill Mayor Jess Anderson, Aaron Nelson of the Chapel Hill Chamber, Lee Bowman of Legion Land and Development, and Travis Thompson of Beechwood Carolinas all spoke during the event. Mayor Anderson highlighted the project’s commitment to including affordable housing, while Thompson reflected on the collaborative effort required to bring a development of this scale to life. He noted that while projects often begin with “drone pictures and drawings,” it is ultimately “the people in hard hats who bring it to life.” Thompson also recognized Carolina Commercial Contractors as a key partner, along with the teams responsible for horizontal construction and engineering, and acknowledged the project’s architect, FMK Architecture.

The time capsule, which will be placed within one of the building’s walls by the Carolina Commercial team, contains mementos from the day, including the current edition of The Daily Tar Heel, information about Chapel Hill, and a scroll signed by attendees and many of the individuals involved in bringing the project to fruition.

CCC Managing Members Carter Keller and Buddy Keller were in attendance, as well as many of the CCC Beechwood team. “It is wonderful to see so many of those involved with this project on site here together, acknowledging the tremendous progress so far,” said Carter Keller. 

Carolina Commercial is serving as the general contractor for Building 5 and Building 11, the first two structures under construction at the 120-acre South Creek site. One building will feature apartments for rent along with ground-floor retail and office space, while the other will offer luxury condominiums with expansive views of Chapel Hill and the surrounding green spaces.
